RADON MITIGATION SYSTEM INSTALLED

WCCRC just had a Radon Mitigation System installed at Stamford Village Apartments. This is to help reduce the effects of hazardous gas that is naturally occurring in the ground throughout this region. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, this part of New York state has been determined to have high concentrations of Radon. Radon is an odorless gas that naturally occurs in the ground and can seep into homes through cracks in the foundation. Radon can cause numerous heath problems and may lead to lung cancer. In fact, it is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers, and causes 21,000 deaths annually in the U.S.. Persons over 50 are particularly susceptible in that they have lower immune systems and tend to spend more time indoors.

Many people are unaware of the danger of radon and do not test their homes unless being sold. The EPA recommends that all homes be tested regardless of age. If homes test positive with levels over 4 pCi/L, a radon mitigation system should be considered.
